The analogy is one used by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to describe the process of enlightening the world, establishing cosmic life here on earth, selling pencils one at a time.
Like any of Maharishi’s teachings this comment is brimming with knowledge. It is not that Maharishi was trying to be profound – His life here was a blueprint of cosmic life realized, an awakening of the entire spectrum of human consciousness. This is the simple reason He accomplished so much and shared such deep knowledge in an accessible way. As a warrior He even transcended the enjoyment of sleep in favor of His global task, the destruction of ignorance and bringing an end to global suffering.
Back to the pencils. What is a pencil? An inexpensive, utilitarian instrument, used to convey information, a way to transmit knowledge timelessly, by writing it down, where it stands independent of its author and available to any audience.
However, as critical as it is, it is not an esteemed job to sell pencils one at a time, nor one that will in and of itself lead to wealth. This informs our attitudes, of patience, faith, and humility. No matter what, there will always be another pencil to sell. π
This silent action, of always transcending ourselves and our context, in service to our greatest goal, is critical. Otherwise, as we become more successful, more cosmically oriented, we can get lost in any number of ways – the world opens its doors to us – we gain the skeleton key.
But in innocent deference to Totality, we see even our greatest triumphs as just another pencil sold in the sequence. Enlightening the world, assisting its cosmic compliance, is a big job, so as we normalize each victory, it allows us and our allies to move much, much faster in reaching the goal.
We use all of our skills and abilities for this, yet take no credit ongoing. Of course we appreciate our success, but only to freely read our compass pointing to the next cosmic completion, our next audacious and exciting direction! The cosmos brims with vitality, all of it accessible as we join in, both as enablers of divinity, establishing cosmic life, and humbly and faithfully, as sellers of pencils. Would you like one? π

I am back on the path after being sidetracked for forty years. It appears that a lot of heavy lifting has been done by those who persevered. I am most grateful and maybe someday will be fully part of the team.
